The brutal killing of a wild pregnant Elephant in a silent valley, Kerala got clear cut condemnation from each section of society. It is being regarded as an inhuman and anti-social activity which will not only possess the threat over the existence of animals but also on our so-called Humanity. We all are creatures of the same source but mighty has always suppressed over the feebles either for their enjoyment or for their luxuries.
We human always advocates for our Liberty, Freedom, and Justice but never contemplate over rights of other fellow creatures that are sharing a common environment with us being an essential part of Biodiversity. We got our freedom, Liberty, and development only in terms of maltreatment of others. The so-called development and advancement have possessed a great threat to other living beings.
This is the only one among such incidents that exposed our barbarism through which we possess danger for them. There are thousands of anthropogenic activities that affect them e.g. using plastics, degrading the quality of water, soil and air by discharging industrial effluents, emitting carbon in the atmosphere, poaching, hunting are the major threats for their existence. If we evaluate the reason behind such reckless activity then it is just our greed and acquisitiveness. We are degrading our biodiversity at an unprecedented level. The number of animals and birds are either vulnerable, critically endangered or on the verge of extinction.
Definitely recent incidents are ashamed off and must be discoursed along with consideration of data which says that More than 200 million animals are killed for food around the world every day just on land. Including wild-caught and farmed fishes, we got a total closer to 3 billion animals killed daily. That comes out to 72 billion land animals and over 1.2 trillion aquatic animals killed for food around the world every year. Is it humanity???
Many can advocate against this data by mentioning their food habits and so-called right to eat anything in the context of their Negative Liberty. Those who are paying Rest in Peace to humanity on the name of this incident and are very much fond of Chicken Biryani, aren’t their advocacy is hypocritic and partial. It is definitely not about something pertaining to religion and no need to give it a communal form If any religion restricts such inhuman activity then why not accept it. Also, such man-animal conflicts in such protected areas are not new to us.
Man – animal conflict is the burning that needs urgent attention by policymakers. Legislating stringent laws will not suffice to address the conflict. Science-based policies are the need of the hour. Each and every one of us is responsible for such disbalance in our ecosystem if not by one means then by another but we all are in it. It is the right time to accept that we Humans didn’t have Humanity ever, it was just hallucination that we are the embodiment of Humanity and it is resting in peace long ago.
